League History

The Greater Boston Soccer League was started in 1994, formed originally from the old Massachusetts Inter-Company Soccer League. The Inter-Company League included many of the areas biggest companies playing soccer as an employee activity on weeknights in the summer. Teams included Digital, Polaroid, Raytheon, John Hancock, Hewlitt-Packard, DRI/McGraw-Hill, AGFA, Badger Engineers, State Street, Biogen, ENSR, Wang, and more.

As the league became more competitive, many teams began recruiting from outside the company ranks. Teams were no longer really representative of the companies for whom they were playing, and new teams were looking to get into the league that were not necessarily “company” teams but exhibited the same level of sportsmanship and spirit as our existing teams. In order to welcome this potential expansion, the league identity was changed to the Greater Boston Soccer League. The first year of GBSL offered both corporate and club conferences of play, and added 8 new teams including the Irish Village Club who continue to field teams in the league today.

As the summer league grew in the mid-90’s, some teams began to express interest in playing into the fall after the summer season ended. The first fall season included a modest four teams playing round-robin format on Sunday mornings in Arlington. Eventually the fall Sunday session grew into a spring Sunday session as well, leading to the league’s current three season format. Some of the summer men’s division clubs play in other competitive leagues in the spring and fall, thus the GBSL plays only co-ed during these two seasons while expanding to include a men’s division during the summer session.

New teams and players are always welcome, and the league mission remains to provide an opportunity for anyone looking to play soccer in a friendly and recreational yet competitive environment to be able to do so. With a home base in Lexington, the GBSL has always sought to play on nice fields and ensure experienced, qualified officials for games. Divisions of play are always well balanced leading to close games and great fun, and ultimately to exciting playoffs with t-shirts for all champions!
